OU Daily: Jeremiah Fears named to SEC All-Freshman Team

Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears was named to the SEC All-Freshman team Monday afternoon.

Fears was one of five SEC freshmen selected for the team. The other four members were Texas’ Tre Johnson, Georgia’s Asa Newell, Auburn’s Tahaad Pettiford and Alabama’s Labaron Philon.

On the year, Fears has averaged a team-high 16.3 points, 4.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. The freshman guard is also averaging 4.1 rebounds per game. Fears is the only SEC player to average at least 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Fears, a four-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree who has played in all 31 games and started each of the last 28, already ranks fifth in OU freshman history with his 504 points. He trails Trae Young (876), Wayman Tisdale (810), Jeff Webster (640; redshirt)and Willie Warren (525). He ranks second among OU freshmen with his 160 free throw makes, fourth with his 48 steals and fifth with his 129 assists.

Throughout the course of the season, Fears has put up impressive point performances, including 26 points against Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinals, 30 points against Michigan in the Jumpman Invitational, 27 points against Mississippi State and a career-high 31 points against Missouri last Wednesday.

Over the last six contests, Fears is averaging 20.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists. He is the only player in the SEC this season to average at least 20.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists over a six-game stretch (only five other SEC players have done it over the last 10 seasons; LSU’s Ben Simmons, Kentucky’s Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, LSU’s Tremont Waters, Alabama’s Kira Lewis Jr. and Auburn’s Sharife Cooper).

Fears and the Sooners are back in action when they open up the SEC tournament against Georgia (20-11, 8-10) at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 12 in Nashville, Tennessee.
