SAN DIEGO – Following a weekend split against quality competition at the Purple Classic in Phoenix, the San Diego softball team swept this week’s WCC Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. Junior utility player Taylor Johnson and junior left-handed pitcher Kelsey Tadlock both excelled this week as they helped their team pick up a pair of victories with their stellar play.
Johnson, hit .538 in four games last weekend in Phoenix as she hit a pair of home runs and drove in eight runs against top teams from the Mountain West and the WAC. Taylor currently leads the WCC with five home runs this season and is tied for the league lead with 17 RBI.
This is Johnson’s first career player of the week award, as the conference’s leading hitter a season ago is once again near the top of the leaderboard in numerous offensive categories. Serving as the San Diego first baseman in 22 of the team’s 26 games this season, Johnson stood out against the WAC leader GCU on their home diamond as she went 3-for-4 at the plate and hit a three-run homer over the left center wall on Saturday night.
Tadlock, pitched in three of the four games this weekend in Phoenix as she allowed just a pair of runs across 11 1/3 innings of work against UNLV, GCU and Utah State. Getting the start in the circle during Sunday’s win over the Aggies, Kelsey earned her fourth overall win of the season by tossing six innings and allowing just a pair of runs and recording two strikeouts in the outing.
This week’s award marks the second time in Tadlock’s USD career that she’s received the conference’s pitcher of the week award, as she also won on April 22, 2024 after tossing a perfect game on the road against Pacific. Among WCC pitchers this season, Tadlock is ranked sixth in the league with a 3.16 ERA and is allowing the fourth lowest opponent’s batting average at a .260 clip through her 62 innings in the circle this season.
