By Scott Allen – Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer is one of the fiercest competitors in baseball. Case in point: Scherzer’s reaction when Nationals Manager Dusty Baker visited the mound in the eighth inning on Tuesday to check on his ace.
On the mound, Scherzer is described as a bulldog. Off the field, he likes spending time with his four adopted dogs. Last year, Scherzer and two of his shepherd mixes, Bo and Rafi, starred in a PSA for the Humane Society of the United States to promote Pets for Life, the organization’s program to provide pet owners in underserved communities access to affordable pet care.
In a PSA for the D.C.-based Humane Rescue Alliance that debuted this week, Scherzer describes the journey of a good doggie named Glee, who traveled from the streets of Birmingham to an overcrowded Alabama shelter before she was brought to HRA.

Look at that good dog! Glee, who has two different-colored eyes like Scherzer and at least one of the pitcher’s dogs, was adopted shortly after the PSA was filmed this spring.
“Animals — and especially rescue animals — are an important part of our lives,” Scherzer said in a release. “My wife Erica and I are proud to work with the Humane Rescue Alliance to help find homes for the dogs and cats that so desperately need them.”
Erica Scherzer serves on the board of directors for HRA, which is the result of last year’s merger between the Washington Humane Society and the Animal Rescue League. An HRA spokesman said the organization is in talks with the Mystics, Redskins and Wizards about featuring athletes in future PSAs with adoptable pets. Kirk Cousins and his wife, Julie, attended the organization’s “Bark Ball” last June with their dog Bentley.
